Bitget's Stock Perpetuals: 376 Tickers, 20x Leverage, and a Weekend Price Hole

CryptoSignal

Two tickers went live on Bitget this week. One of them is spelled wrong.

Danaher trades as DHR. AT&T trades as T. But the contract Bitget listed for AT&T reads TSTOCK โ€” a suffix that does not exist on any US exchange tape. Maybe the venue appended it to dodge a collision with the crypto token T, the Threshold Network ticker. Maybe it is a transcription error that survived review. Either way, it is a small tell: somebody shipped this product fast, and the naming convention was not the thing they were worried about.

Here is what actually stopped me. Alongside those two listings sits a number: 376. That is how many stock perpetual contracts Bitget says it now carries. USDT-settled. Up to 20x leverage. Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

And here is the question that number raises and refuses to answer. What exactly are you trading at 3 a.m. on a Saturday, when the New York Stock Exchange has been closed for thirty-five hours and will not reopen for another twenty-nine?

Nobody at the venue published an answer. So I went looking for the mechanism myself.

The misreading to kill first

This is not tokenized equity. This is not RWA, and it should not be counted in any RWA tally.

The tell is settlement. USDT-denominated margin, USDT-denominated PnL, no on-chain mint, no on-chain redemption, no wallet address holding a share, no transfer agent, no smart contract custodying anything. What exists is a synthetic perpetual swap โ€” a contract that tracks an index price and never delivers anything. There is no share, no beneficial ownership, no dividend you can claim, no proxy you can vote. It is a price bet denominated in a stablecoin, executed inside a centralized matching engine, cleared by the same entity that runs the order book.

The confusion matters because it changes which risk you are actually underwriting. On-chain tokenized equities โ€” Ondo's products, the xStocks line โ€” carry a different trade-off: you give up depth and liquidity in exchange for self-custody and verifiability. Bitget's product runs the trade-off backwards. You get 24/7 access and leverage the regulated world will not give you, and you surrender every form of verification except the venue's own word.

And the venue's word is all we have here. Everything in this article traces to one source: Bitget's own product announcement. Self-reported, marketing-adjacent, no third-party audit of the 376 figure, no disclosed notional volume, no open interest, no market maker arrangements. The fact that the product exists is high-confidence. The scale claim is not. Validating the signal amidst the validator noise means knowing which half of the announcement you can actually weigh.

There is precedent, and it is not encouraging. Binance listed tokenized stocks in 2021 and pulled them within weeks under European regulatory pressure. The category has a history of arriving loud and leaving quiet.

The anchor that is an order of magnitude too weak

Here is where the mechanics get interesting, and where nobody has said anything.

A stock perpetual has no expiry, so it needs something to hold it to the underlying. On a crypto perp, that something is the funding rate โ€” a periodic payment between longs and shorts that pulls the contract back toward spot. On an equity perp, the same mechanism has to do the same job. But the underlying has a clock, and the contract does not.

Bitget's Stock Perpetuals: 376 Tickers, 20x Leverage, and a Weekend Price Hole

Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern, the index price stops updating. The perp does not stop trading. For the next sixty-plus hours, the only force tethering contract price to fair value is funding โ€” a nudge applied every few hours, typically in the basis points.

Run the arithmetic. A weekend is roughly seven to eight funding intervals. At a generous 0.05% per interval, that is about 0.35% of corrective pressure across the whole window. Now put a 20x position against it. At 20x, a 5% adverse move is a liquidation โ€” your entire margin is gone. A single earnings release dropped after the Friday close, a single weekend macro headline, a single sector shock, and the gap can run 5 to 10% before the index ever prints again.

The anchor is correcting at roughly one-thirtieth the magnitude of a single gap event. That is not a tuning problem. That is a structural mismatch between a continuous instrument and a discontinuous underlying. The funding rate cannot defend a 20x book against a 60-hour information blackout, and no parameter setting fixes that.

The window nobody is hedging

Follow the arbitrage. In a normal market, when a perp drifts from spot, someone shorts the perp and buys the stock, or the reverse, and the spread closes. That is what makes manipulation expensive.

On a Saturday, that arbitrageur cannot act. The hedge leg is closed. The only people left in the book are those willing to take naked directional risk on a frozen reference price, and the book is thin because the professionals went home with the equity market. Push size into that book and the perp moves. Nothing pulls it back except funding, slowly, and the reopening print on Monday, violently.

I spent most of 2024 mapping basis spreads between spot Bitcoin ETFs and futures, looking for the weekly rhythm in institutional rebalancing. The lesson from that work transferred cleanly here: when two venues run on different clocks, the spread stops telling you about value and starts telling you about who is asleep. The validator's eye sees what the chart hides โ€” and what the chart hides on a Saturday equity perp is an empty room.

Corporate actions are the unexploded ordnance

Second gap in the disclosure: what happens when the underlying does something corporate.

Danaher has spun off before โ€” Envista in 2019, Veralto in 2023, the latter a business worth roughly $20 billion distributed to shareholders. AT&T spun off Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022 and cut its dividend nearly in half the same year. These are not exotic events. They are routine for both of the tickers Bitget chose to announce.

On a spin-off ex-date, the spot price mechanically drops by the value of the distributed entity. A holder of actual shares receives the new stock and is made whole. A holder of a perpetual contract receives nothing โ€” unless the contract's reference price is adjusted, or the position is credited. If the adjustment mechanism is undisclosed or applied late, a long at 20x gets liquidated by an accounting event that cost the shareholder nothing.

Neither the announcement nor anything adjacent to it describes how splits, spin-offs, special dividends, halts, or delisting events are handled. That silence is the single largest unquantified risk in the product. A perp that mishandles a spin-off is not a leveraged equity exposure; it is a leveraged exposure to someone's operations team.

Breadth as a risk multiplier, not a growth metric

Then there is the 376.

Danaher is liquid. AT&T is liquid. The other 374 tickers are a distribution, and distributions have tails. Listing that many contracts implies an automated onboarding pipeline, because per-name due diligence at that scale is not economically survivable. Automation is fine for tickers. It is not fine for market maker commitments, and no market maker arrangement has been disclosed.

My three months running a low-end Solana validator in 2021 taught me to distrust headline throughput and trust the stress test. Congestion did not show up in the spec sheet; it showed up in millisecond latency spikes during the exact moments everyone needed the chain. Same principle here. A 376-ticker roster is a stress test on liquidity provisioning, and the venue has published the roster without publishing the results.

There is a second-order consequence. On venues that run auto-deleveraging, losses from an uncollateralized gap do not vanish โ€” they get socialized across the book. Every illiquid name added is another place a weekend wick can cascade into someone else's position. Breadth without depth is not coverage. It is surface area.

What the revenue model actually is

Strip out the marketing and the economics are clean, which is worth saying plainly. No new token. No TGE. No emissions schedule, no unlock cliff, no yield paid from new depositors. Revenue comes from taker and maker fees, funding spread, and liquidation penalties. There is no ponzi flywheel here, and structurally that makes it more honest than a good portion of DeFi.

Bitget's Stock Perpetuals: 376 Tickers, 20x Leverage, and a Weekend Price Hole

But be precise about the counterparty. In a fee-plus-liquidation model, venue revenue rises when leveraged retail traders are wrong. At 20x, on an instrument with a frozen reference price for two-thirds of the week, the distribution of user outcomes is going to be extremely skewed. That is not a scandal. It is a business model with a regulatory target painted on it.

And it is invisible. This product generates no on-chain footprint โ€” no TVL, no active addresses, no protocol revenue line. Every dashboard that maps this sector from chain data will systematically undercount it. If you build your sector map from on-chain signals, this entire category is a blind spot, and it is growing inside the blind spot.

The contrarian read

Everyone is going to frame this as equities arriving in crypto. That is the wrong vector. What is actually happening is that crypto's most successful export โ€” the perpetual swap, a BitMEX artifact from 2016 โ€” is being rented out to traditional assets, and the entity that wins is the one that owns the liquidation engine, not the one that owns the asset. The asset is a data feed. The moat is the risk book.

The risk everyone is underweighting is jurisdictional, not technical. European rules cap retail leverage on stock CFDs around 5:1, with negative balance protection and mandatory risk warnings. Twenty-to-one is a fourfold overshoot of the regulated ceiling. US treatment of security-based swaps is stricter still, and Hong Kong bars retail leveraged securities outright. So the binding constraint on this product line is not engineering. It is geography. When the constraint tightens, the first sign will be silent geo-gating and a quiet delisting โ€” not a blog post. Reading the collapse before the narrative breaks means watching the access list, not the announcement.

What I am watching

Not the ticker count. That number will go up regardless.

Watch three things: whether funding rates on the illiquid tail blow out over a weekend relative to the liquid names, which would confirm the anchor is failing where depth is thinnest; whether the venue publishes a corporate action adjustment policy before the next spin-off, not after; and whether the geographic access list quietly narrows.

Chop is for positioning, and this launch is the venue positioning โ€” not a directional signal about anything.

The question worth holding is simpler than any of the above. If the reference price is frozen for sixty hours and the leverage is twenty times, who exactly is on the other side of that trade at 3 a.m. on a Saturday โ€” and what do they know that you do not?
